Australia, la terra delle meraviglie

Quando sono arrivata in Australia, non avevo grandi pretese. Non avevo alcuna intenzione di cercare il lavoro dei miei sogni ne’ tanto meno di arricchire le mie finanze. Il mio movente era la mia passione per la natura, per le avventure non pianificate. L’unica cosa che ambivo ad arricchire era il mio tesoro di esperienze uniche.

Oggi, devo dire di ritenermi più che soddisfatta. Mai avrei pensato nella mia vita di ritrovarmi in posti cosi’ incantevoli e immacolati. Di fare campeggio in una tenda circondata da canguri e opossum o nella foresta pluviale più antica al mondo. Di poter coccolare un koala o un wombat vero! Mai avrei immaginato di dare da mangiare ad un cassowary o un rock wallaby; di esplorare le meraviglie subacquee dalla barriera corallina più colorata ed estesa al mondo; di vedere delfini e balene sguazzare gioiosi non troppo lontano da me, dalla riva. E chi avrebbe mai pensato di guidare di notte per centinaia di kilometri nel vuoto più totale dell’outback australiano, spegnere i fari e contemplare l’immensità di un cielo stellato che incanterebbe chiunque. Ma soprattutto di acquistare una macchina del 1990 e farci 7000, dico bene SETTE MILA Km!! Di recarmi in un paese a 600Km dalla città più vicina e lavorare in una fattoria!

Ogni giorno vissuto in questo continente mi ha insegnato qualcosa. Ed ogni persona incontrata sul cammino, nel bene o nel male, ha contribuito alla mia crescita personale. Questo 2014 lo ricorderò per sempre come l’anno più ricco di emozioni, di tutta la mia vita_

Crabs Natural Sand Art

These are some pictures I took on Florence Bay, a desert beach on Magnetic Island, 8 kilometres offshore from the city of Townsville, Queensland, Australia.

Have you ever seen anything like this?

The first time I came across this weird sand drawings was in New South Wales, in Australia, on one of the breathtaking beaches of Jervis Bay. At first sight, it looked like a massive shells composition or tiny little stones but then I touched them.

And… it was sand! Simple, soft, empty sand bubbles that all close to each other were creating amazing shapes, almost looking like a painting! Trust me, it is something that you would call art! Unintentional art! 

How does this happen? Who is the artist? How does it make such perfect tiny little bubbles masterpieces?

Well, the expert sand sculptor we are mysteriously talking about is the Sand Bubbler Crab! They are small crabs, around 1 cm, widespread across the Indo- Pacific region, where they occur abundantly on sandy beaches in the tropics and sub-tropics.

Why do they act like this? This kind of crabs dig burrows in the sand, where they remain during high tide. When the tide is low again, they emerge on the surface looking for food. And it is while scouring the sand for this purpose that they leave beautiful unintentional art creations, leaving behind a remarkable reminder to not look for food in that area twice.
