I Forgot My Phone

One day an old friend of mine said:

“I Fear the Day That Technology Will Surpass Our Human Interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots”

Too bad for you Albert, that day has come.

As human beings we get attached to things that we think we can’t live without.

Once again, I am pro- technology, I love it. I love to download the latest apps and staying updated in real team about what’s going on in the world.

But we shouldn’t miss real things as well.

We should bear in our mind the importance of speaking with our friends during the happy hour; the feeling of a real hug instead of a virtual kiss :*

The sound of a LOUD LAUGH instead of a fake smile 🙂

I love technology. I really do.

I think people like Jimmy Wales, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Larry Page and Sergey Brin are geniuses!! I mean these men (or their teams) changed our lives, the way we learn and search for information. I don’t even remember my life before Google or Wikipedia. Oh no! I don’t wanna even think about it.

And what about Pierre Morad Omidyar ?? Now be honest.. how Ebay turned your life into a perfect one!? You can buy everything you like (or you are ashamed to buy physically in a shop) from all over the world by a click, without dealing with any annoying sales retailer!

I am the FIRST person who enjoys all this inventions and new cool ways of buying and doing things.. but still, sometimes, I find the beauty and essentiality in old and yellowed tools.

Ray Tomlinson had the great idea to invent the Email. HOW USEFUL!! From business to old friendships the way to communicate was completely reinvented! What I wonder is… have you ever read an original letter between your grandparents? Nothing is more authentic and true of a love letter sent during the second World War. I wish someone could be still able to let you fall in love through letters.. You could feel the emotions. You could smell the perfume. You could tell the tone of voice of your interlocutor.

World War Letters

Same reflection about books. Michael Hart started the birth of eBooks and definitely he changed the way to read. Nowadays two out of three people have a Kindle! But can you imagine your living room or your kids house in 20/30 years time without any book? What are they gonna put on bookcases? All the Kindle generation instead? No way. Books are sacred for me. I couldn’t read not even study an online book. I am sorry 😦

What about encyclopedias? Have you an idea of how long Diderot and D’Alembert worked on it? I will never throw my Science, Italian Literature, History Encyclopedias away! Even if they are huge and dusty all time!

Encyclopedia

And so on..same thoughts for online newspapers, mp3 and digital music, etc.

My conclusion is I love everything which is innovation, sharing, e-learning and I recognize all the people behind this ideas and projects are crazy geniuses and beautiful minds.

But a lot of my peers don’t event know who was the inventor of Encyclopedia or the first Manifest or all the people who died to obtain press freedom (and still today). Our next generations won’t even spend a moment of their lives thinking about this if WE don’t teach them and don’t inform them about HOW we are able to enjoy all the technological facilities today!

So enjoy ,and please do it in the right way, all the cutting edge tools that we have today but still remember how we arrived to this point.
